The Second North American Conference for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Questioning Muslims and their Friends will run this weekend with workshops, and events intended to help lesbian and gay Muslims reconcile their sexual orientation with Islaam. It is the largest event of its kind, with participants from Bangladesh, Belgium, The Netherlands, and Britain.

The Al-Fatiha Foundation, who are organising the conference, have 2000 members worldwide. The group regularly receives threats. Because of this, media and press representatives will not be allowed to photograph or film workshops and panel discussions. The conference venue is being kept secret.

Faisal Alam, one of the organisers, said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle: "I`ve heard over and over you can`t be gay and Muslim. It`s an oxymoron. Sex is a taboo in our families, our communities and in our mosques. Now, we can point to Al-Fatiha, where we can address our issues and put a face to it."

But Muzammil Siddiqi, president of the Islamic Society of North America wants gay and lesbian Muslims to repent. He said responded: "Being gay and Muslim is a contradiction in terms. Islaam is totally against homosexuality. It`s clear in the Koran and in the sayings of the prophet Mohammed(saws)."

Conference delegates will march in San Franciscos Pride celebrations on Friday, 22nd June 2001.
